Price Tag written by prominent Perth artist Jeffrey Jay Fowler began its journey in the HotHouse Company incubation at the beginning of 2016.
Over the course of the year students were assembled into a focus group to work with Jeffrey. The students selected had an interest not only playwriting but also in curriculum areas such as Economics, English and History. The process brought the group together to work as dramaturges, supplying Jeffrey with ideas and engaging in a collaborative and creative process.
The process went through several phases leading to the eventual table read, that brought together some of Perth’s most innovative creatives who performed two iterations of Jeffrey’s work in an intimate showing to the students who had invested in the creation of the work.
The next exciting phase will see three students work with Jeffrey and The Last Great Hunt as they prepare to perform Price Tag at this year’s Perth Fringe Festival
It’s been amazing to watch Jeffrey transform the ideas that we students workshopped together with him in the first few sessions. I learned heaps of exercises that can be used to expand on both concepts and characters in an active and fun way. (Year 11 student)
Watching Price Tag develop and evolve from just a simple concept to a bundle of scenes, characters and ideas has been both incredibly inspiring and eye-opening (Year 9 student)
In our last session, which was an initial read through of the first draft of the play, I once again felt so privileged to be working with and witnessing professional actors in the play making process. It was such a valuable learning tool to be able to watch such talented people, and it was exciting to see the play begin to take shape (Year 10 student).
